Biography

Elizabeth Esther "Bettie" Howell was the daughter of Robert S. Howell and Nancy E. Gatling Howell. She was born in Southampton County, Virginia circa 1863. She had 6 children.

Bettie passed away December 20, 1931 at St. Vincents Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia from pulmonary tuberculosis. It is believed that she is buried next to her husband Simon Titus Pope at "The Homestead" near Capron, Virginia.

Elizabeth E. (Bettie) Howell married  Simon Titus Pope on February 17, 1886 at the home of

Robert S. Howell. The couple moved and resided in Ivor in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

Simon T. Pope Obituary


S.T. Pope, a well-known citizen of the Capron community, died at his home
April 26, 1922, in his eightieth year, having celebrated his seventy-ninth
birthday April 9, 1922, the anniversary of the surrender at Appomattox. Mrs.
Pope was a brave and loyal Confederate soldier, enlisting in 1862 in Company B,
Ninth Virginia Regiment of Infantry, Armisteadís brigade, Pickettís division.
His captain was J.D. Myrick, who resigned, and John. R. Parker was elected to
fill his place. He was wounded at Gettysburg and in the battles around
Petersburg and surrendered at Appomattox. He had been a member of Urquhart-
Gillette Camp U.C.V. for a number of years and was always present at the State
and Southern Confederate reunions.

The deceased was a consistent member of Whiteheadís M.E. Church, uniting
with the church in early life and serving his Master faithfully until his
death. He was the son of the late Simon T. Pope and Susan Joyner Pope and is
survived by his widow, who was Miss Elizabeth E. Howell, and by four sons, G.
Franklin, Olie S., L. Hudson and Guy L. Pope, all of whom lived together at the
old homeplace.

The funeral was held April 27 in the presence of a large concourse of
friends and there were many pretty floral offerings laid on the grave of this
estimable man. The active pallbearers were C.W. Dickens, E.B. Prince, W.J.
Cole, S.A. Whitehead, G.A. Fowler, P.E. Knight, J.R. Dickens, B.E. Livesay, Jr.
Among the honorary pallbearers were three Confederate veterans C.C. Vaughan of
Franklin, L.L. Manry of Courtland and C.C. Richardson of Wakefield, and the
following friends and neighbors: G.W. Burgess, W.D. Bell, W.L. Worrell, J.R.
Gilliam, Felix Bryant, Marvin Barnes, G.W Bradshaw, T.W. Story, J.R. Knight,
J.R. Howell, Julian Dickens, Clyde Nurney, Emmett Babb and Junius Fowler.

** NOTE** Another obituary claims that Simon Pope is buried on the "homestead" near Capron, Virginia. It has not been verified that Mr. Pope is in fact buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Boykins.

At this writing, little is known about Elizabeth Howell. Her name appears in the 1870 Maneys Neck (Hertford County), North Carolina Census. She is 9 years old and is living with Robert S. and Nancy Howell.
Update 1/7/2011: Elizabeth Esther (Bettie) Howell married Simon T. Pope on February 17, 1886 at the residence of Robert Howell (her father). He is 38 years old and she is 21 years old. Southampton County Courthouse Marriage Book 5 page 552.
Simon T. Pope cannot be confirmed as buried in Beechwood Cemetery , Boykins, VA. Another obituary claimed he is buried at "The Homestead" near Capron. Research still continues to verify where Simon T. pope is buried.
George Franklin Pope is buried in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland, VA.
Olie Simon Pope is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Courtland, VA
Nora Wray Pope - burial place not known at this time.
Leonard Hudson Pope is buried in Concord Presbyterian Church in Rawlings, VA.
Lillian Estelle Pope is buried in Poplar Spring Cemetery in Franklin, VA.
Guy Lloyd Pope, Sr’s is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Courtland, VA..
Bettie Howell Pope’s burial place is not known. She is listed in the 1930 census living with her son George Franklin Pope.
