Susannah Howell and Wm Murfee
This Deed made This 16th Day of April A.D. 1852 between Susanah Howell of Hertford County, NC and Wm Murfee of Southampton County, VA Whereforth. That the said Susanah Howell do promise unto the said Wm Murfee his heirs, Administrators, (abbrv) Executors (abbrv) or assigns all of her devine right in the tract or parcel of land at or near Franklin Depot in the county of Southampton, Va. David Howell, her late husband “decd” seized and possessed from the 1st day of January 1853 for the term and during her (the said Susanah Howell’s) life to hold to his and his heirs, administrators (abbrv) for proper use for which the said Wm Murfee promises to pay her fifty dollars lawful money to be paid at the end of each year as the amount of rent becomes due. Nevertheless the said Wm Murfee is to allow Robt G. Edwards to retain possession of land till the 1st of January 1855 he having leased the same for the term of Three years commencing the 1st of January 1852 at the price of fifty dollars and the said Robt G Edwards pay to the said Wm Murfee amounts of fifty dollars for his rent annually as it becomes due for the years 1853 and 1854 and the receipt of the said Wm Murfee will be good for the same. This Deed of Lease was proved as to Susannah Howell & Wm Murfee, both parties thereto by the oaths of John B. Wiggins & Lemuel J. Howell, the subscribing witnesses thereto and admitted to record.

The Court doth assign Susannah Howell guardian to Nelson Howell orphan of David Howell dec'd and she together with Anthony M. Howell Wm Peele her securities entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of Two Thousand Dollars conditioned as the Law directs.

Susannah Howell's Last Will and Testament
Susana Howell
In the name of God Amen. I Susana Howell of the County of Hertford & State of North Carolina being of sound mind & memory but considering the uncertainty of my earthly existence do make and declare this my last Will and testament in manor and form following That is to say first that my Executors hereinafter named shall provide for my body A decent burial suitable to the wishes of my relations and friends and pay all funeral expenses, together with my just debts howsoever and whomsoever owing out of the money that may first come in his hands, as A part of my estate, First. Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Ann Maria Britt wife of Lemuel Britt the sum of Two dollars, to her and her heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Daughter Mary A. Ferguson one feather bed and furniture to her and her heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my son Lemuel J. Howell one Bofat one grind stone and one chist to him and his heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Gattsey E. Howell one bureau to her and her heirs forever. Item I give and bequeath all the residue of my estate every thing that I own within doors and without doors to be equally divided between all my living children that is living at this time except Ann Maria Britt wife of Lemuell Britt. I do hereby nominate and appoint my two son's Robert and Lemuel Howell my soul executors to this my last Will and testament revoking all former wills made my me, Sines Sealed published and declared this to be my last Will and testament. In the presences of us who has subscribed and names as witnesses. October the 18th 1863

This paper writing purporting to be the Last Will and Testament of Susana Howell deceased, is exhibited for probate in open Court, by Robert Howell, one of the Executors therein named, and the due execution thereof by the said Susanna Howell, is proved by the Oath and examination of Jet R. Darden one of the Subscribing Witnesses thereto. It is therefore Considered by the Court, that the said paper writing and every part thereof, is the Last Will and Testament of the said Susanna Howell, and the Same is Ordered to be Recorded and filed.
And thereupon the said Robert Howell one of the Executors as aforesaid, duly Qualified as such by taking the Oath required by Law.
