Joseph Equarth Howell, the fifth son of Edwin was born in May, 1862 and died February 17, 1944. He married Sallie A. Bracey, born October 30, 1865. Joseph and Sallie were married December 23, 1890 in Manny's Neck, N.C. and brought forth three children. There were two boys, Freeman Scarboro and James Herbert and one girl, Annie Elizabeth, called "Lizzie". It appears that after the death of Sallie Bracy, Joseph remarried Pattie Bryant Howell.

Joseph is buried in Buckhorn Baptist Church Cemetery as well as Roger M., Evelyn L., and Patty Bryant Howell, wife of J. E. Howell. The grave markers were placed there sometime in the late 1990’s. The last record that could be found of him and his family was the Census taken in 1900 that show he and Sallie along with Freeman, James and Elizabeth were all together. Sallie died December 20, 1913. Joseph married Pattie Bryant sometime after that. He passed away February 17, 1944 at the home of his daughter Elizabeth in Sedley near Franklin, Virginia. No further information is available on Pattie Bryant Howell.
