IN MEMORIAM

Died. Rebecca E. Griffin, whose maiden name was Britt, died at her residence near Burlington, MO Sept. 16, 1888, aged 78 years, 10 mos and 6 days. Sister Griffin was born in South Hampton County, VA. At the age of 15 years, she was married and shortly after united with the Methodist Church. In 1845 the family removed to Missouri, where sister Griffin spent the remainder of her life in this county. She reared a large family of children, part of them, with her husband, preceded her to the grave; but in those which remain she leaves the good heritage of a pious life and a Godly example. For a number of years a widow, bearing the double burdens of her large family, she carried herself with that firmness and christian propaiety (sic) peculiar to the true Christian. Connected with the old Richland congregation and later with that at Burlington for so many years back, she became so intimately connected with the life of the church and the community that she came to be looked upon as a mother by all. She was quite a bible reader and when called upon would lead the congregation in prayer with much fervor. Many of the preachers will remember her with kindness and sympathy.

She stood among her brethren thro' a long life, as a noble, honorable woman, and above all as a woman of deep piety and solid Christian character.

Religion was with her a reality, a work of God in the heart, the witness of the spirit, a sure and certain hope of eternal life. Honored mother, rest forever from thy earthly toil, in the Father's house on high. To her weary soul the rest of heaven will be sweet indeed. Our tears fall on her grave, our hearts revere her name. May her mantle fall on her children.

It is said her last words were "Glory be to God." Thus it is, that they are blessed who die in the Lord.

D. R. Shackleford, her pastor.

Notes for PATRICK K. GRIFFIN:

Moved from Virginia to Missouri sometime around 1845. They seemed to have come to Missouri with Rebecca's mother, Mary Britt, and her two brothers, Boling and Nathan Henry. Possibly, her sisters, Mary Beal and Louisa Caroline Hart were with them at that time.

The Patrick Griffin family were in Boone County, MO at the time of the 1850-60-70 Census.

In 1880 census, Patrick is living with granddaughter, Maggie Earley (18), grandson Lon Giffin (20), Eliza Britt (50) widowed. Robert Holcrum (9) orphan and Jane Griffin (45) widowed with her Children Fenton, 14, Minnie, 12, Jennie, 10, and Mary 6.
