This Indenture made the 22nd day of February in the year of our Lord 1831 between Anthony M. Howell and Emmy Howell his wife of the county of Southampton of the one part and Dempsey Blythe of the county aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Anthony M. Howell for and in consideration of the full and just sum of two hundred and seventy five dollars current money of Virginia to be paid by the said            to them in hand on or before the unsealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof the said Anthony M. Howell and Emmy his wife doth hereby acknowledge and therefore acquit and discharge the said Dempsey Blythe his heirs and assigns forever and thereafter to be fully and eternally satisfied contented and paid have _____ bargained sold ____  _____ ___ and by these presents do grant bargain sell a lien ___ release set over deliver, confirm unto him the said Dempsey Blythe and to his heirs assigns forever all that plantation ___ _____ tract and parcel of land wherein the said Dempsey Blythe now lives on being the tract __ purchased of Anthony M. Howell _____ lying and being in the County of Southampton aforesaid and containing by estimation seventy five acres be the same more or less and bounded as follows to wit: Beginning at a ___ ___ a corner just made then bounded by a large corner tree marked ___ of the said land and in the _____ which is a ____ thence up the Branch to a sweet gum thence a line of marked trees to a to a p__ corner of Joshua Joyner line thence along a line of marked trees to a corner pine of B___ ____, thence a long said line to a med oak a corner of Rioley ____ thence ______  _____ line to a pine corner of said land and thence a straight line to the beginning with all ___ ____ ___ buildings ____ water ways and water prospects here unto ____ appurtenances whatsoever to the same belonging or in any more appurtenances and the ___ and reversions remainder and remained and rents and profits thereof and all the estate right title and interest ___ __ ___ of them the said Anthony M. Howell of in and and to the said and every part there. To have and to hold the said _____ tract or parcel of land and promises aforesaid unto him the said Dempsey Blythe his heirs and assigns forever and the said Anthony M. Howell and Emmy his wife for _____ their  ___ execution and administration or assigns the said seventy five acres of land and promises with all and every the appurtenances aforesaid against him the said Anthony M. Southampton County: In the Clerks Office the 26th day of February 1834.

This Indenture was acknowledged by Anthony M. Howell and together with Certificate thereto ____ of the ____ ___ and relinquishment of ____ of Emmy Howell wife to the said March Howell parties thereto admitted to record. And at a court held for the County aforesaid the 17th day of March 1834. The said Indenture and Certificate were returned upon the proceedings of the day.

This Indenture made this 26th February Eighteen hundred and thirty four between Dempsey Blythe of the County of Southampton of the one part Anthony M. Howell of the said County of the other part and Thomas C. Jones of the aforesaid County of a third part. Witnesseth that whereas the said Dempsey Blythe ___ and ___ by a Bond to the said Anthony M. Howell in the sum of two hundred and seventy five dollars and whereas for the further assurance of the payment it is agreed by the parties hereunto that a conveyance in trust shall be made to the said Thomas C. Jones for the benefit of the said Anthony M. Howell in case the said Bond shall ___ ___ ____ paid with lawful interest thereon on or before the first day of May 1834. Now this Indenture Witnesseth that the said Dempsey Blythe for and in consideration of the promises and for the further sum of two hundred and seventy five dollars to him in hand paid the receipt of which is acknowledged has bargained and sold and by these presents doth for himself his heirs Executor and administrators give grant bargain and sold unto the said Thomas C. Jones his heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of land tow horses & cart and wheels whereon the said Dempsey Blythe now pr___ lying in the said county of Southampton containing by estimation seventy five acres be the same more or less and bounded by the known and reported ___ thereof and also all the buildings ___ water advantages and appurtenances to the same belonging or in any ___ as pertaining and the reversions remainders ___ ___ and profits thereof and all the estate right and title of him the said Dempsey Blythe of in and to the same To have and to hold the aforesaid granted and bargained promises with ___ of the appurtenances unto the said Thomas C. Jones his heirs and assigns in Trust forever and it is hereby declared to be the intent and meaning of these presents that if the said Dempsey Blythe shall punctually pay to the said Anthony M. Howell his heirs or assigns the said sum of two hundred seventy five dollars and interest aggreable to the time of the said Bond to the said Anthony M. Howell then the said Thomas C. Jones his heirs and assigns shall hold the said land and premises above granted to the sole and proper use and behalf of the said Dempsey Blythe and the said Thomas C. Jones covenants and agrees with the parties hereto taken care the said (sic) the said Dempsey Blythe his heirs Executors or administrators shall fail to make payment to the said Anthony M. Howell his heirs or assigns or before the first day of May 1834 the due on the Bond aforesaid that then the said Thomas C. Jones his heirs or assigns he the said Thomas C. Jones his heirs ___ ___ or assigns or ___ of them shall give thirty days notice and sell at public sale above mentioned tract of land and shall pay the money a___ there from to the said Anthony M. Howell his heirs or assigns so far forth as shall be their due and after satisfying the said Bond and interest and all the expenses remaining or arising from the notice and sale shall pay the surplus money to the said Dempsey Blythe or his assigns. This Indenture made and entered into this 26th day of August one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine between James D. Massenburg and Stephen Murdaugh Commissioners in chancery on the one part and Anthony M. Howell on the other part. Witnesseth that the said James D. Massenburg and Stephen Murdaugh by virtue of a decree of the County Court of Southampton and for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred and forty eight dollars for the payment whereof is secured by bond as the decree directed. Have bargained and sold and by these presents do bargain and sell unto the said Anthony M. Howell his heirs and assigns the tract of land whereof Newit Edwards dec'd seized containing one hundred and forty seven acres together with all the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders and every part and parcel thereof. To have and to hold the said tract of land and premises herein before mention or intended to be bargained and sold unto him the said Anthony M. Howell his heirs and assigns forever and the said James D. Massenburg and Stephen Murdaugh for themselves and their heirs the said tract of land unto the said Anthony M. This Indenture made and entered into the 28th day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty five between Dempsey Blythe and Jincey his wife of the one part and Anthony M. Howel of the other part. Witnesseth that for and in consideration of two hundred and seventy five dollars current money of Virginia to them in hand paid by the said Anthony M. Howel, they the said Dempsey Blythe and        his wife have bargained and sold and by these presents do and of them bargain and sell unto the said Anthony M. Howel his heirs and assigns one certain tract or parcel of land containing by estimation seventy five acres be the same more or less being the tract formerly purchased by Dempsey Blythe of the aforesaid Howel and bounded as follows, beginning at a persimmon tree thence by a line of marked trees to a corner tree in the branch, thence up the branch to a sweet gum, thence by a line of marked trees to a corner pine, thence by a line of marked trees to Balay Drakes corner to a red oak Ridley Drakes corner thence to another corner tree and thence to the beginning and the reversion and reversions, remainder and remainders yearly and other vents issues and profits and every part and parcel thereof. To have and hold said tract of land with the tenements hereditaments, and all and s___ the premesis herein before mentioned or intended to be bargained and sold with every part and parcel thereof with every of their right members and appurtenances unto him the said Anthony M. Howel his heirs and assigns forever. And the said Demsey Blythe and his wife Jincey for themselves and their heirs the said tract of land with all and singular the premises and appurtenances herein before mentioned unto the said Anthony M  Howel his heirs and assigns forever free from the claim of them the said Demsey Blythe and Jincey his wife or either of them their heirs or any person claiming under them.

This Indenture made and entered into this 9th day of January 1836 between James D. Massenburg, James Scott, and Jordan Edwards ___ Commissioners in Chancery on the one part and Anthony M. Howell of the other part. Witnesseth that the said James D. Massenburg James Scott and Jordan Edwards in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars secured by him the said Anthony M. Howell as directed by a decree of the County Court of Southampton have granted, bargained and sold released and confirmed and by these presents do and each of them doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Anthony M. Howell his heirs and assigns forever all the tract or parcel of land of which Jordan Joyner ___ seized and and possessed containing ninety acres more or less it being the tract of land purchased by said Jordan Joyner from Amos Joyner and Nancy Joyner the particular whereof will appear by reference to their deed bearing date the 10th day of October 1821 and the reversion and reversions remainder and remainders yearly and other rents issues and profits thereof. To have and hold the said tract of land with the tenements hereditaments and all and singular the premises herein before mentioned or intended to be bargained and sold with every part and parcel thereof with every of their rights ______ and appurtenances unto him the said Anthony M. Howell his heirs and assigns forever. And the said J. D. Massenburg James Scott and Jordan Edwards will warrant and ____ all right which they may lawfully convey under the aforementioned decree unto him the said Anthony M. This Indenture made and entered into the 22nd day of November 1837 between David Godwin of the first part Almarine A Delk of the second part, and Samuel P Nicholson Littleton R. Edwards, Amos Drewry & Etheldred E Briggs of the third part, all of the County of Southampton – Witnesseth that whereas the said Samuel P Nicholson, Littleton R. Edwards, Amos Drewry, and Etheldred E. Briggs have become security for the said David Godwin in two delivery bonds, one of the said bonds made payable to William B Harvey and the other to Stephen Murdaugh ____ of Randolph Edwards dec’d for the benefit of Anthony M. Howell and the said Godwin also stands justly indebted unto Samuel Briggs in the sum of fifteen dollars 95 cents by bond due the 24th November 1837 and the said David Godwin is anxious and desires to secure & indemnify his aforesaid securities from all loss or damage whatever in consequence of their security _____ aforesaid and to secure the said Sam’l P. Nicholson & Bernard & Briggs the sum of money respectfully due them hath for and in consideration of the promises aforesaid as well as for the further consideration of sum one dollar to him in hand ___ by the said Almarine A. Delk the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, granted, bargained & sold and by these presents do grant bargain & sell unto the said Almarine A. Delk, his executors & administrators, the following property to wit ~ One boy horse, one Buckskin or cream colored horse, one Barouche & Harness, one Negro woman named Peggy, one mare ___, & horse cart & wheels 1 ___ cutter, one hominy mill, 1 set ___ ___ & glass, 1 sofa,& 2 ____ tiny chairs, 3 wash stands, pitcher & bowls, 8 feather beds and furniture, 1 side board, 1 tent safe, 1 large mahogany table and every other article of household furniture belonging to the said Godwin. To have and to hold the said property unto him the said Almarine A Delk his executor or administrators to the only proper use and behalf of him the said Almarine A Delk his Executors and administrators forever. Upon this special Trust and confidence that the said David Godwin is to be permitted to the possession of the aforesaid property & the use and ____ thereof to take what the said Sam’l P. Nicholson Littleton R. Edwards, Amos Drewry & Etheldred E Briggs or a majority of them shall thank proper to ___ __ sale thereof for the purpose of paying the debts aforesaid for which they are security, or until the said Sam’l P Nicholson & Bernard & Briggs or either of them shall order the sale for the payment of the debts due them as aforesaid & the interest thereon. And upon this further trust, so soon as a sale shall be ordered as above provided for the said Almarine A. Delk (or in case of death for his legal personal representative who is hereby authorized to act) shall take possession of the said property herein before conveyed, and giving reasonable public notice of the time & place of sale, sell at public auction to the highest bidder for cash the property aforesaid and with the monies arising from such sale ___ pay all the necessary costs & expenses of such sale & this conveyance, then pay and satisfy the debts aforesaid for which the said Nicholson Edwards, Drewry & Briggs and securities and then pay & satisfy the debts herein before mentioned and the said Nicholson & Bernard & Briggs and if any surplus should then remain pay the same to the said David Godwin his Executors administrator or assigns. Howell of the County of Southampton of the one part & James Joyner of county aforesaid of the other part ___ that the said A. M. Howell for & in consideration of the full & just sum of three hundred dollars current money of Virginia to be paid by the said James Joyner to him in hand on or before the unsealing & ____ of these presents the receipt whereof the said A. M. Howell doth hereby acknowledge & therefore ____ & discharge the said James Joyner his heirs & assigns forever and themselves therewith of entirely satisfied, contented and paid have granted & bargained and sold _____  ____ an ____ and by these presents do grant, bargain, sell, ___, ___, ____, ___, deliver and confirm unto him the said James Joyner now lives it being the tract I purchased of A. M. M. Howell of in & to the said ___ every part thereof to have and hold the said plantation tact or parcel of land and premises aforesaid unto him the said James Joyner his heirs & assigns forever and the said A. M. Howell for themselves their heirs executors and admins or assigns the said seventy five acres of land & premises with all pertinence aforesaid against him the said A. M. Howell and his heirs & against all persons whatsoever claims or demands the said ___  or any part thereof shall & will warrant forever defend by these presents. In Witness whereof the said A. M. This Indenture maid this ___th day of December 1837 between James Bradshaw of the County of Southampton of the one part and A. M. Howell of the said County of a second part and Stephen Murdaugh the aforesaid County of the third part. Witnesseth that whereas the said James Bradshaw stands indebted by bond to the said A. M. Howell in the sum of Three Hundred dollars, whereas for the further assurance of the payment it is agreed by the parties hereunto that a conveyance in trust shall be maid to the said Stephen Murdaugh for the benefit of the said A. M. Howell in case the said bond shall not be punctually paid with lawful interest thereon on or before the first day of January next. Now this indenture witnesseth that the said James Bradshaw for and in consideration of the promises and for the further sum of three hundred dollars to him in hand paid, the receipt of which is acknowledged has bargained and sold & by these presents doth for himself, his heirs executors administrators give grant bargain and sold unto the sd Stephen Murdaugh his heirs & assigns all that tract or parcel of land whereon the said James Bradshaw now lives lying in the said county of Southampton containing by estimation sixty one & a half acres be the same more or less also the personal estate belonging to the said James Bradshaw & bounded by the known and reputed bounds thereof & also all the buildings, woods, waters advantages & appurtenances to the same belonging or in any wise appertaining & the reversions remainders, rents, ___ & profits thereof & all the estate rights & title of him the said James Bradshaw of in and to the same. To have & to hold the aforesaid granted & bargained premises with every of the appurtenances

unto the said Stephen Murdaugh his heirs & assigns in trust forever & it is hereby declared to be the true intent and meaning of this presents that if the said James Bradshaw shall punctually pay to the said A. M. Howell his heirs or assigns the said sum of three hundred dollars & interest agreeable to the terms of the sd. bond to the sd. A. M. Howell then the sd. Stephen Murdaugh his heirs & assigns shall hold the said same and property & premises above granted to the sole & proper use thereof the said James Bradshaw & the sd. Murdaugh ____ & agree with the parties hereto that in case the sd. James Bradshaw his heirs Executors or administrators shall fail to make payment to the sd. A. M. Howell his heirs or assigns on or before the first day of January next the sum due on the bond aforesaid that then the said Murdaugh his heirs & assigns shall stand seized of the above granted & bargained premises for the purposes following that is to say that the request of the said A. M. Howell his heirs and assigns the said Murdaugh his heirs executors & administrators or assigns or either of them shall give twenty days notice & sell at public the above mentioned tract of land & property shall pay the money arising therefrom to the sd. A. M. Howell his heirs or assigns is far forth as shall be them due & after satisfying the sd. bond & interest & all the expenses remaining from the notice & sale shall pay the surplus money to the sd. James Bradshaw or his heirs. In Witness whereof the said parties have thereunto set their hands & seals the day & year above mentioned.

This Indenture made and entered into this the ____ day of ____ AD 1835 between Edwin G Hart of the first part, Henning T Smith of the second part and Edward Harrison & Jethro Darden of the third part all of the County of Southampton & state of Virginia except Jethro Darden who is of the County of Hertford state of North Carolina. Whereas the said Edwin G Hart stands justly indebted to the said Edwin Harrison ____. Jethro Darden as follows to wit: To the said Edwin Harrison in the sum of seventy two dollars and thirteen centsby bond bearing date the 21st day of January 1839 and to the said Jethro Darden in the sum of twelve hundred and thirteen dollars & fifty two cents by bond bearing date the 22nd day of September 1839 and whereas also the said Edwin Harrison stands bound as security for the said Edwin G. Hart in the foloowing causes to wit. to a bond __ ___ John D Hart for the sum of five hundred & seven dollars and 72/100 on demand the 6th day of September 18?? to a bond due Anthony M Howell for the sum of one hundred and eighty eight dollars seventy three cents on demand the 21st day of January 1839 and to a bond due Robert Warren for the sum of thirty seven dollars and sixty six cents on demand the 12 day of September 1838 and one bond in _____ of John Pope for seventy dollars due the 1st day of November next with interest from the 16th day of February 1839 and the said Edwin G Hart being willing and desirous to secure the payment of the debts due the said Edwin Harriaon and Jethro Darden respectfully as well as to indemnify and save harmless the said Edwin Harrison from all loss or damage whatever in consequence of his security ___ aforesaid hath agreed to convey the property herein after mentioned unto the said Henning T Smith in Trust to be sold for that purpose. Now Therefore this Indenture witnesseth that the said Edwin G Hart for and consideration of the premesis as well as for the further consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand paid by the said Henning T Smith at or before the unsealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained and sold and doth by these presents grant bargain & sell unto the said Henning T Smith his Executors adminstrs and assigns forever the following slaves which he the said Hart holds in fee simple to wit. man Tony woman Nancy girl Edith also his interest on the following other slaves which were allotted to his wife as ____ in the state of her former husband Richmond Dillard to wit men Joe, Bob & Cornelius boys Aicher & Daniel & woman Phillis likewise Three horses all his stock of hogs cattle & sheep five feather beds & furniture and all his household & kitchen furniture and farming utensils of every description. To have and to hold the slaves aforesaid conveyed in fee simple and his interest in those held by him as the ___ of his wife in her former husbands estate and the increase of the ___ of the said slaves together with the ____ aforesaid and its increase and all other property herein before conveyed unto him the said Henning T Smith his Executors administrators and assigns upon the following Trust and condition . That is to say that the said Henning T Smith shall permit the said Edwin G hart ____ possession of the said property and take the hires and profits thereof to his own use until it shall be the pleasure of the said Edwin Harrison and Jethro Darden or either of them or their Execs Admns or assigns of either of them to collect the debts herein before mentioned due them respectively or the said Edwin Harrison his Execs or Admin shall desire to be released from his responsibility as security to the debts herein before specified and if the said Edwin G Hart when required by the said Edwin Harrison & Jethro Darden or either of them or the Exec or Admns or assigns of either of them shall fail to pay them or either of them the debt or debts herein before mentioned due them respectively and legal interest therein and the cost attending this Indenture or shall when so required by the said Edwin Harrison his Execs or Admins fail to pay and discharge the debts herein before mentioned for which the said Edwin Harrison ___ security and all interest due therein and entirely release & exhonorate the said Edwin Harrison from all responsibility therefore it shall and may be Lawful for the said Henning T Smith _____ _____ requested by the said Edwin Harrison & Jethro Darden or either of them or the Execs Admins assigns of either of them to make sale of the property herein before conveyed to him a public auction for cash having fixed on the day and place of sale at is own discretion and given reasonable public notice thereof and out of thr monies arising therefrom first pay and satisfy _____ and ______ cost and expenses attending the said sale and this conveyance then pay and satisfy the debts and interest herein before mentioned due the said Harrison & Darden or either of them or the Execs Admins or assigns of either of them or such part of the said debts or either of them as may be due them by and satisfy the debts aforesaid herein mentioned for which the said Harrison is the said ____ ____

Howell & Emma his wife of Southampton County state of Virginia of the one part & David Howell sen’r of Nansemond County state of Virginia of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Anthony M. Witnesseth that the said Uriah Rawls & Lucy his wife for and on consideration of the sum of nine hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said March Howell at or before the unsealing & delivery of these presents the receipt I do hereby acknowledge have bargained and sold and by these presents do acknowledge them doth bargain and sell unto the said March Howell his heirs and assigns a certain tract of land lying and being in Southampton County containing one hundred and twenty acres more or less marked and ___as follows. Beginning at or near a spring on Black Water River adjoining Seth D. Williams some ___ up the river from the P & B R.R. Road warehouse thence down said River to a marker line of Seth D. Beale or the said Thomas Newsom his heirs executors and administrators or assigns set up and sell to the highest bidder for cash the aforesaid tract or parcel of Land and the said Negro man Davy ___ ___ much of the said property as will be sufficient to satisfy the said sum of three hundred and fifty dollars ___ ___ ____ thereon and the costs after giving Twenty days notice of the time and place of sale by advertisement to be posted in at least three public places in the neighborhood of the sale and out of the proceeds of the said sale pay the aforesaid sum of three hundred and fifty dollars with interest thereon and the cost of this indenture unto the said Thomas Newsom his heirs executors administrators or assigns and the balance if any after satisfying said debt interest and costs pay over to the said Willis E. Beale his heirs Executors administrators or assigns But if the said Willis E Beale his heirs Executors or administrators shall on or before the first day of December in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty pay unto the said Thomas Newsom the aforesaid sum of three hundred and fifty dollars with interest thereon and the costs so that ___ ____ be made in the payment thereof then this Indenture to be void otherwise to remain in full force and virtue. This Deed made this 10th day of October 1857 between W W Briggs Trustee in a Deed of Trust executed by James J Williams To secure Jno M Gurley, A. M. Howell & others of the one part and Jno M Gurley of the other part. Witnesseth: that the said W. W. Briggs acting as Trustee under said deed did sell to the highest bidder on the 10th day of October 1859, The said Tract of land conveyed in said Deed of Trust and at the sale so made Jno M Gurley became the purchaser by bidding therefore the sum of three hundred dollars. Now this Deed witnesseth, that the said Briggs for the consideration of Three Hundred Dollars to him paid by said Jno M. Gurley doth Bargain and Sale from Abram Riddick to said Jas. J. Williams to him & his heirs forever only conveying to said Gurley such title to said Land as I held as Trustee aforesaid.
